According to some, the Mayan Calender is real and if they are right, the end of our world is much closer than you would imagine possible. According to the Mayan’s, our world will end on December 24, 2012 when we pass through what they call “The Dark Rift.” As our entire solar system approaches The Dark Rift we will experience more and more crazy weather, earthquakes, volcano erruptions and radical tempreture changes, eventually severe enough to kill most, if not all of us. These people claim that this has happened at least three times already and is documented in the Bible.
I don’t know what to think, but one thing I like about it is that it takes some of the pressure and stress off the insane wars we fight and all other fears imposed on us by government. Hell, the entire planet could be smoked in just a few years. Why worry about politics?
Anyway, what do you think?
This Mayan question is in the Science/Mathematics category because it is loosely scientific in modern day terms, but was considered the defacto science back when as the Mayan’s are still considered by some to have a far better understanding of mathematics than we have currently.

The end of the 13th b’ak’tun is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world according to their beliefs, but a new beginning or time of re-birth. According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the Quiché Maya of the colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fifth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first four creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fifth world where men were placed.
The last creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, and it has been discussed in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation, the next pole shift or something else entirely. However, the Maya abbreviated their long counts to just the last five vigesimal places. There was an infinite number of larger units that were usually not shown. When the larger units were shown (notably on a monument from Coba), the end of the last creation is expressed as 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, where the units are obviously supposed to be 13s twenty places larger than that b’ak’tun. In this age we are only approaching 0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.13.0.0.0.0, and the larger places would all need to similarly roll over to 13 again to match the date of the new creation.[

The Mayan calendar actually said NOTHING about a “dark rift”. That’s just a few new-age whackos inserting their own interpretations in there, probably in the hope that you’ll eventually be gullible enough to subscribe to their websites!
The Mayan Calendar is merely a calendar. That’s all. It merely expires/runs out of date on the 23rd december 2012. THAT’S ALL! It has to end sometime. All calendars have to end sometime. Why does this have to mean the end of the world. Just forget all that guff. If the Mayans were able to really foretell the future then one could presume they might have avoided the collapse of their own civilisation.
Oh, and this is NOT documented in the Bible. According to the Bible the world is going to end at midnight, New years Eve, 1999… Or was it 999? Ummm…. maybe it’ll be 2999.
This is NOT the science and mathematics section, as it is the alternative section. Rather like alternative medicine; if medicine works, it is medicine and not alternative to anything. Same thing with this category. This kind of thing needs to be in mythology or religion; not science. They have imposed this ” alternative ” category on us; we did not ask for it. So, some of us would like to see you people go back to where you need to be; not cluttering up the science section.

Let’s suppose that for a single minute in infinate time we were actually to consider the calendar of an erased race of people as fact of the future. If the Earth is to get smoked on 2k12 then well, we have 5 years left to do as much damage to it as humanly possible. And if just if it were true, than all the Global warming crackjobs would have liitle left to say. I say, sit back and relax. Stop reading too far into all these people’s mis-beliefs. The planet has been here for billions of years and will remain here for a billion or two more. with or without us. We have to be one of the most wasted species on earth. We are so consumed with our very demise that we seek out every possible avenue to it. How neurotic…..

I don’t think the end of an calendar system means the end of the world. after all, the world did not end when a computer showed 1900 instead of 2000. If some guys thought 40 years calendar is enough, maybe the same was for ones who invented this 5000 years old calendar.
Other Indian calendars ended before. Like one of the Inca, which ended in the year when Spanish got there – this is why they did not fight back much.
It is another one which ended in 1978 but I don’t remember which one, I thought it was the Mayan calendar.
This ends could be only age ends (their calendar is divided in ages ~400 years). The end of the last age is probably what we consider the end of the calendar, but it could be improper to do so.
From what I remember from history, most civilisations started to decline after 2000 – 2500 years, some got up to 3000+ and only few were completed erased. But I we can do this already in only few days. I have serious doubds we will make it another 100 years.
for I’m here: 10000 years ago man was the same as now and maybe even 50000 years ago. same inteligence, same power, same looks, same feelings, same wishes…

Well i think well what i’ve heard is that the Mayan calendar has turned out to be very specific and everything that it has said has happened but it never said something bad was gonna happen it said a big change it says its 4 the good maybe the world being destroyed is for the good who knows whatever happens it has 2 be for the good right…. well thats what i think
